Stillness

We have forgotten that we come from stillness. When the egg and sperm meet, the first thing they do for 24 hours is rest in a still and “pregnant” pause. We have forgotten that we have stillness inside, tangible and present at this very moment. Our very own nervous system operates in cycles of rhythmic motion (contraction and expansion) and stillness; it pauses to reset, recalibrate and restore balance of whole body function, of all the systems of the organism. The culture and lifestyle of the “West”, the industrialized Nations, easily obscures the natural, the still, the simple. There is so much light and movement, pressure to perform and grow. There are literal illnesses that simply come from the most basic lifestyle choices; how we eat, move, sit, breathe, rest. Postural pain is ubiquitous, as is Irritable Bowel Syndrome and hosts of other somatic dysfunctions that are widely recognized as originating from psychological and emotional disturbances.

We generally seem to lack the capacity to sit in silence, listening to the ever present life rhythms that govern our existence. It is no wonder that mindfulness is a buzz word of this current time period. As we begin to realize what has been lost in the attempt to progress our technology and capacity for advancement, there is abundant information and resources aimed at returning our awareness to simple phenomena. The primal, rhythmic breath; the persistent, potent pulse of the heart beat. The experiences we have within us are resources for this rediscovery of the stillness and simplicity of life. We know we need to slow down.

In Craniosacral Therapy, a person is supported to return to a quieter way of perceiving, allowing the potent intelligence of the central nervous system to come to the fore and mend tension patterns, imbalances of fluid distribution and hormone levels; to replenish minerals, flush and release toxic buildup and oxygenate every cell of the organism. Thus, this holistic work supports a return to Health, a recovery of inherent well-being.

CHALLENGE:  Allow yourself 10 minutes a day to simply attend to the stillness felt inside the skin.  Begin to understand the value of quiet and stillness.
