Store of Beliefs
We have all inherited an overwhelming abundance of teachings, beliefs and perceptual biases from our early life. It sounds cliche, but the science confirms more and more the truth of this challenging, human situation. When we are younger than five years old, our brains are operating with wavelengths that are akin to the adult brain being in deep hypnosis or trance. This essentially means that we are downloading information about absolutely everything around us and within us. The information is directly encoded in the unconscious brain and life operates mostly from this efficient and powerful hub of control, all except for the moments when we are consciously alert and actively choosing our perceptions and beliefs. This is understandably not so often, as it takes much effort to sustain such focus and attention.
What is also true is that most of us have not actually taken the time to seriously investigate these unconscious drivers of our experience and perception. We have not taken the reigns on our life just yet. As we mature through the process of self-exploration and investigation, we can come to a place of choice. A place where our beliefs can be re-chosen, re-written or removed. At a certain point, our beliefs and habitual ways of relating and perceiving can be shopped for in a metaphorical “store” of beliefs. We all want the freedom to choose and we can all relate to the experience of being stuck, frozen and trapped inside of our reality, with a sense of something deeper pushing to become known, realized and actualized.
TRY: Watch your inner dialogue for a brief while and write down some of the messages you tell yourself habitually. Question their validity and your need of them. Is this who you want to be?
